Historical Context

Following the unification of Germany under Wilhelm I in 1871, the new German Empire introduced the Mark as its official currency. Design Details

Obverse: Bareheaded portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II facing right, encircled by the inscription “Wilhelm Deutscher Kaiser König von Preussen.”

Reverse: Imperial eagle with shield, inscriptions “Deutsches Reich,” the year of issue, and the denomination “20 Mark.” After 1890, the design changed to feature a larger imperial eagle with a smaller shield, created by Otto Schultz of Berlin.
