Historical Significance

Following Prussia’s victory in the Franco-Prussian War, Wilhelm I was proclaimed the first German Emperor on January 18, 1871, in the Palace of Versailles. This marked the unification of 25 German states into a single empire. The subsequent monetary reform replaced the Taler with the Mark as the new legal tender, and these gold coins became the backbone of imperial currency.

The 20 Mark Wilhelm I coin circulated widely as legal tender, symbolising both the economic strength and political unity of the Empire. The Prussian Kingdom, being the largest and most powerful state, issued the majority of these coins, making them historically and culturally significant.

Design Details

Obverse: Bareheaded portrait of Emperor Wilhelm I facing right, encircled by the inscription “Wilhelm Deutscher Kaiser König von Preussen.”

Reverse: The imperial eagle with shield, inscriptions “Deutsches Reich,” the year of issue, and the denomination “20 Mark.” From 1874, the abbreviation “M” was replaced by “Mark” in full. In 1890, under Wilhelm II, the eagle design transitioned to a larger imperial eagle with a smaller shield, designed by Otto Schultz of Berlin.

Collector & Investor Appeal

These coins are sought after by both numismatists and bullion investors. Their 900/1000 gold purity ensures long-term value, while their historical significance makes them highly collectible. Premiums can be higher for scarce years, particularly 1888, known as the “Year of the Three Emperors.”
