The 20 French Francs Génie Gold Coin is one of the most minted and recognisable coins of the French 3rd Republic, following only the Napoleon III and Marianne Rooster in popularity. Struck between 1871 and 1898, this coin represents the transition from Empire to Republic, proudly carrying the national values of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. Its edge inscription, “DIEU PROTÈGE LA FRANCE” (“God protects France”), reflects a time when the State and the Church were not yet fully separated.

Obverse Design

Designed by the renowned engraver Augustin Dupré, the obverse features the Génie — the Guardian Angel — writing the word “CONSTITUTION” on a blank tablet set atop a stone pillar. Around him appear key French symbols: the proud Gallic rooster, the lictor’s fasces with the Hand of Justice above, and the legend “REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE” overhead. Dupré’s signature is engraved at the base, a hallmark of his artistic craftsmanship.

Reverse Design

The reverse proudly displays the national motto “LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ” within an oak leaf wreath, symbolising strength and unity. In the centre sits the denomination “20 FRANCS” with the year of issue beneath, encircled by fine beading at the rim.
