Historical Background

Umberto Ranieri Carlo Emanuele Giovanni Maria Ferdinando Eugenio of Savoy was born in March 1844 in Turin, the son of King Victor Emmanuel II and Archduchess Adelaide of Austria. Highly educated, he entered the Sardinian army as a captain and took part in the Italian Wars of Independence, commanding several key battles. In 1878, following his father’s death, Umberto I ascended to the throne as King of Italy, reigning until his assassination in 1900.
